YouTube is testing premium subscription plans for two new people in a particular country, the company confirmed to TechCrunch on Monday. The Tiers are piloted in India, France, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
This news was first reported by Money Control.
“We are experimenting with new ways to increase flexibility and value for YouTube premium subscribers, including offering two premium plan options in some countries.
Similar to Spotify’s Duo Subscription Tier, YouTube’s new plan gives you access to premiums at a discounted price as two people live together. The plan is aimed at people who want the benefits of YouTube Premium, such as ad-free viewing and background play, without committing to a complete family planning.
When it comes to YouTube, the new plans will allow us to increase our subscribers and potentially generate more revenue. For example, those who may have cancelled their premium plans after a price rise in recent years may decide to sign up for a discounted two-person plan.
Test launches will be made as Google-owned YouTube is working to diversify subscription offerings. In March, YouTube rolled out a new premium subscription tier called Premium Lite, which allows users to watch “most” videos without ads for $7.99 a month. The plan is currently available in the US, Australia, Germany and Thailand.
At the time, the company said it combined YouTube Music and YouTube Premium subscriptions to reach over 125 million users worldwide, including trials.

It is unclear when or planning to roll out the two-person premium plans in more broad or additional countries, as with other test launches.
