First lady Melania Trump attended her husband’s second inauguration on Monday, wearing an outfit that evoked the solemn, understated atmosphere of President Donald Trump’s swearing-in.
Melania, a former model, is often talked about in and around Washington DC for her gorgeous looks, and today is no different. However, she surprised many when she debuted in an unusually modest and modest outfit.

What is First Lady Melania Wearing to the Inauguration?
For her first of many festival outfits that day, Melania opted for a more modest look compared to her 2017 Jackie O-inspired powder blue outfit.
On Monday, she wore a matching dark navy blue coat and skirt, a matching brimmed hat that covered her eyes, matching heels and gloves. The costumes were designed by American Adam Lipps.
First lady Melania’s dress is ‘for a funeral’
While many praised Melania’s signature poise and high fashion, some online likened her nondescript look to a funeral.
“Melania Trump’s dress code and body language is like she’s at a funeral,” one user wrote.
Why is Melania wearing a hat?
Many critics noted the overall gloomy demeanor of First Lady Melania Trump, who had attended Mass at St. John’s Church earlier in the day. In the photo, Melania’s eyes are almost completely covered by a large hat, with white stripes blocking her vision.
First lady Melania often wears hats at official events, and during a visit to the French president in 2018, she wore a white hat for a statement.
At the inauguration, Ivanka Trump also wore a hat, but it was much smaller and more modest to match her forest green outfit.
Another commentator, who identifies as a supporter of former Democratic presidential candidate and outgoing Vice President Kamala Harris, also joined the conversation.
“Melania is in mourning today. She will spend four more years by this clown’s side.”
The 54-year-old is no doubt expected to wear a number of high-end outfits during the event, just like she did in 2017.
