Tiktok has launched AI capabilities from first image to video, the company announced Tuesday. This new feature is called “Tiktok Ai Alive” and allows users to turn static photos into videos within Tiktok Stories.
This feature is only accessible via Tiktok’s story camera, and uses AI to create short form videos with “movement, atmosphere and creative effects,” says Tiktok.
For example, if a static photo has sky, clouds, or sea, Tiktok gradually changes the photo, clouds begin to drift, and the sound of waves crashes. Alternatively, you can animate group selfies that emphasize gestures and expressions.
A few years after Tiktok introduced an in-app text-to-image AI generator, new image-to-video features will be launched. While both Instagram and Snapchat offer text-to-image AI capabilities for creators, Tiktok goes a step further by providing users with the ability to create videos from images. It’s worth noting that Snapchat says that creators will be able to generate AI videos from images.

AI Alive Stories has AI-generated labels that notify users that the content has been created with AI. Additionally, this content has embedded C2PA metadata. This is a technical standard that helps others identify that the video is being generated by AI, even if it is downloaded and shared beyond Tiktok.
“We’ve always built with safety in mind, and the same can be said for AI innovation,” Tiktok said in a blog post. “This technology undergoes multiple trust and safety checks to protect our community, allowing for new forms of creative expression. To prevent people from creating content that violates our policy, moderation technology reviews AI generation prompts with uploaded photos and written, as well as AI Alive videos before being shown to the creator.”
Tiktok says it can report videos that people think will break the app’s rules, and that the app will perform a final safety check after the creator shares an AI Alive story.
Creators can create AI Alive videos by opening the Story Camera and tapping the blue plus button at the top of the inbox or profile page. From there, you can select a photo from the story album. Next, the Photo Editor page will display the AI Alive icon in the toolbar on the right.
