New York Yankees designated batsman Giancarlo Stanton may not be ready for opening day due to tendonitis in both elbows, manager Aaron Boone said on Sunday.
The incredible slugger had suffered from elbow pain for most of last season, but he still hit 27 Homers and drove on 72 runs. He was particularly productive in the Yankees’ march to the World Series, hitting .273 in 14 postseason games and 16 RBIs, earning MVP honors in the American League Championship Series.
“It’s hard to say,” Boone said in that Stanton might make his season debut. “I’m not going to put a timeline on it. We’re going to get smarter with it.”
Stanton, 35, is expected to be a key part of the Yankees lineup this season after outfielder Juan Soto lost to a free agency.
Despite being one of the game’s most feared power hitters, the five-time All-Star has been suffering from injuries throughout his 15-year career in the majors.

The Yankees have won Stanton from the Miami Marlins following their 2017 MVP winning season, but since then he has played over 140 games in his seven years with Pinstripe. He played 114 games in 2024 and was missing from a hamstring injury for over a month.
Stanton currently leads all active major leaguers with 429 career home runs, 51 ahead of Mike Trout.
