Xai, the AI company of Elon Musk, released its long-awaited flagship AI model, the Grok 3 last week. Grok 3 enhances the Grok Chatbot app for mobile and web, as well as the Grok experience on Musk-owned social network X.
Given the huge amount of competition in the AI chatbot space these days, it was not a natural conclusion that the Grok 3 would have a lot of impact. Openai’s ChatGpt alone has grown to 400 million active users per week. However, preliminary data suggests that new models have actually started to download and try Grok on people.
The week of Grok 3’s release was estimated by Sensor Tower, Grok’s market intelligence company, which showed an increase of more than 10 times each compared to the previous week. Meanwhile, daily active users of Grok’s US app surged by more than 260% last week, while global daily active users have climbed five times the week.
Muddy water is the fact that the release of Grok 3 coincided with the expansion of the Grok app to several markets in Europe, Latin America and Southeast Asia. This could possibly be part of the app’s global growth.
Grok’s web apps also grew over the same period, independent of mobile apps. According to the Digital Intelligence Platform Simarweb, daily visits to the Grok web app (specifically, Grok.com) have increased from around 189,000 to over 900,000 in the days after Grok 3’s release. Worldwide, daily visits have increased from 627,000 to 4.5 million.
Certainly, they are impressive numbers. But the big question is whether Xai can maintain momentum and keep those users.
Recent controversy threatens to undermine enthusiasm for the Grok 3. Over the weekend, the model temporarily censored certain unfair references to President Donald Trump and President Musk. A few days ago, users discovered that President Trump and Musk were consistently saying they deserved death penalty. Xai quickly patched that issue as well.
