
Karla Sofía Gascón has retreated from the Oscar campaign trail amid backlash against past tweets, but the director of “Emilia Perez” still shows some love for her.
The controversial Netflix musical was awarded the best film not in English at the British Academy Film Awards on Sunday. In his acceptance speech, director Jack Audido thanked the cast, particularly mentioning Gascon after distancing himself from her in the controversy.
“I want to bring this film to life and thank all the amazing artists who are with us tonight: my beloved Zoe (Saldanya), my beloved Serena (Gomez)… I’ll kiss.

Saldanya also mentioned Gascon’s name when she won the best supporting actress in the film and thanked her for “my wonderful cast.”
In January, Gascon apologized after older X posts resurfaced on more topics such as Muslims, George Floyd and others.

In a statement obtained by USA Today, Gascón admitted “conversations about past social media posts that caused injuries,” saying, “as someone from a marginalized community, I know this pain well, so I think I am the one who is a person. I’m deeply sorry. It caused pain.” In another statement on Instagram, she claimed she was “not racist.”

Audido distanced himself from Gascon in an interview with the deadline earlier this month, calling her post “unforgivable” and he said “I’m not talking to her, but I don’t want to.” Meanwhile, Saldanya felt “sad” amidst the controversy on Variety’s “Award Circuit” podcast, but “Emilia Perez” star Serena Gomez is proud of the film, and although she said “magic” Some of them have disappeared.”
