Tech Giant says it expects new features to be “less biased” than previous third-party fact checking programs.
Meta says the “Community Note” feature, which aims to replace third-party fact checkers, uses an open source algorithm developed by Elon Musk’s X.
Meta Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg announced moderation reforms in January amid a gust of big technology movements to infiltrate themselves with President Donald Trump’s administration.
The move follows years of conservative accusations that efforts to confirm facts often label legitimate perspectives as misinformation of political or ideological reasons.
The Meta announcement was welcomed by Trump and many conservatives, but false informatics warned that the move would add a wave of false claims and a tide of fake news online.
In a blog post Thursday, Meta said using X’s technology in a crowdsourced fact-checking tool can “make improvements for your platform over time.”
“As your own version is developed, we may consider different or tuned algorithms to support how community notes rank and evaluate,” Meta said.
“We’re building this openly while learning from our contributors and seeing how it actually works with our products. We don’t think this process is perfect, but we continue to improve as we learn.”
Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and threads, began testing its feature on March 18th, saying 200,000 potential contributors have signed up so far to assess the accuracy of content on the platform.
The California-based tech giant said the memo will not be published unless it is deemed accurate by a diverse range of perspective contributors.
“We expect the Community Notes to operate on a larger scale when fully operational, with less bias than the third-party fact-checking programs it replaces,” Meta said.
“When we launched our fact-checking program in 2016, we believed that we didn’t want to be a truth arbitrator and looked at expert fact-checking organizations was the best solution available.”
Meta says new features will be rolled out across the US after beta testing and will eventually introduce them to all users around the world.
