
San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich “is not expected to return this season and his future for the NBA is uncertain,” ESPN reported on Saturday.
In November, Popovich suffered a mild stroke, moving away from his daily job as a coach and from the public spotlight. He is the best coach ever in the NBA.
He made his first public comment in a statement released on December 16th, stating his desire to return to coaching.
“No one is more excited to see me return to the bench than the talented individual I lead the rehabilitation process,” Popovich said. “They quickly learned that I wasn’t able to coach.”
It’s the latest in Popovich’s future.

When will Greg Popovich return?
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Popovich is not expected to return to his full-time coaching role this season.
The five-time champion coach suffered mild strokes during the season. Charania said Popovich will continue to make progress through rehabilitation and become stronger.
The 76-year-old was the Spurs head coach for 29 seasons.
Who is filling up as the Spurs interim head coach?
Mitch Johnson serves as San Antonio acting coach during Popovich’s absence.
The 38-year-old joined the Spurs in 2019 as an assistant coach. He won the G League Championship in 2018 while working as an assistant for the Austin Spurs.
The Spurs are 24-30 overall and 12th in the Western Conference.
