Red Sox published statement after suicide attempt

Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran and his parents issued a statement after revealing that Duran is currently streaming on Netflix in the Docusaries Clubhouse: Year with the Red Sox.

Duran, 28, said he was thinking about taking his life when he wasn’t playing the way he was capable of. However, he has played strong for the past few years, including becoming an All-Star in 2024, and was named the MVP of that game after hitting a two-run homer at the fifth bottom to give the American League a lead.

“I had already heard that from the fans,” Duran said at the Doxalies. “And what they said to me, it was, ‘I told myself I was 10 times worse in the mirror.’ It was a really difficult time for me.

“It wasn’t easy to talk about this, but I felt it was important,” Duran added in a statement Tuesday. “I trusted the Netflix crew. If I were to share this, I knew I had to be authentic about it. A few years ago I realized I was in a dark place, but I’m still here. I’m still lucky. My head is grateful that my focus is on baseball.

“It’s nothing more difficult than knowing that your child is in pain,” Duran’s parents, Octavio and Dena Duran, said in a statement. And it was “it was heartbreaking to hear” that their sons were experiencing those struggles.

“I’m grateful that he’s still here, that he finds the courage to continue, and that he uses his voice to help others,” Duran said. “If his story could help even one person, it was worth sharing. We are extremely proud that he is today and we love him more than the words can say. We are always in his corner.”
