The AI-powered search engine Perplexity says it is building its own web browser.
In X’s post on Monday, the company launched a sign-up list for its browser, which is not available yet. It’s unclear when it might be or what the browser will look like. But we have a name: Comet.
“Like the search that Prplexity has been reinventing, the browser is reinventing it,” a Perplexity spokesperson told TechCrunch via email. “Looking for the update.”

Perplexity’s browser joins a very busy field and places it gently. Besides current people like Chrome, there are countless third-party alternative browsers out there. Many people offer capabilities comparable to AI-powered features, like the browser company’s upcoming DIA browser.
Confusion may bet that by leveraging the search engine’s user base, it can quickly rise and create some dent in the space where the comet is located.
Perplexity’s product portfolio is growing with rapid clips. Just this month, the company released a opposing “Deep Research” product from Openai, Google and Xai. It followed shortly after two major debuts in January. This is an Android AI-equipped assistant and an AI search API.
Founded in 2022, Perplexity reportedly raised more than $500 million in capital from VCS, and is said to be valued at $9 billion. AI-powered search engines run more than 100 million queries each week to expand monetization efforts like advertising programs.
But the thorns on the perplexed side are a legal battle with the publisher. News Corp’s Dow Jones and the NY Post have expressed confusion over what is called “content creptocracy.” Many other news sites have expressed concern that confusion will intimately replicate content. In October, the New York Times sent a stop and imagination notification to the startup.
Compressor says it offers revenue sharing programs to its outlets and respects publishers’ content.
