PayPal adds hotel reservations within the app with a self-book

PayPal partners with the Hotel Payment Provider self-book to allow users to search and book hotels within the PayPal app.

The company said users can make payments through PayPal at checkout and offer exclusive discounts to users within the app. Users can also use PayPal Buy now and use PayPal Buy on some hotels with the feature enabled.

Those using the PayPal app can access the offers section and search for hotels with filters such as travel dates and number of guests, and use the in-app browser.

Users can see hotels using self-book payment suites in these apps, but it is not clear whether Self-book makes the entire catalog available to PayPal users.

For PayPal, this is a move to upsell another offering to users within the app. The company said the payment products have seen an 84% increase among people paying online for travel.

“We are excited to join the trip alongside Selfbook and enable PayPal customers to discover new merchants and save money through their own rewards and discounts,” PayPal President and CEO Alex Chriss said in a statement.

PayPal also said that Selfbook will soon integrate payment checkout products within the out-of-app workflow. Additionally, Selfbook uses PayPal’s Enterprise Payment Suite to send hotel credit card payments via power.

Selfbook also uses PayPal as a payment partner within Perplexity. This announced the ability to discover and book hotels in chat in March.

“Hotel payments have traditionally been the most fragmented part of the trip. Find one place, book another, pay somewhere else,” Selfbook co-founder and CEO Khalid Menilli told TechCrunch via email. “With PayPal, you break all of that down into a single flow embedded directly in an AI-powered experience like embarrassing. Not only is it more convenient for travelers, it also gives hotels a direct line to guests, gives better margins without commissions, and more control over your brand,” says Meniri.
