Openai has just made its biggest acquisition, scooping up IO, the secret device startup for Jony Ive and Sam Altman, in a $6.5 billion all-capital transaction. ive is the legendary designer behind the iPhone and other iconic Apple products and leads creative and design work at Openai through his company Lovefrom. the goal? It will shoot AI “beyond the screen” and build a new generation of consumer devices equipped with AI.
Beyond technology, there is a clear story play here. Openai is a design genius that frams Altman as a visionary like work, making it all realistic. Social media has had field days with the duo’s step-by-step buddy shots, but it’s hard to miss messaging. We will release the iPhone and turn it into AI.
