Netflix executives are breaking silence in the scandal surrounding “Emilia Pérez” star Karla Sofía Gascón.
The company’s chief content officer, Bellavajaria, was directed at the streaming giant over Gascon’s unearthed racist social media posts in an episode of the “The Town With Matthew Belloni” podcast released Wednesday. We have opened about backlash.
“I think it’s a real shame for the 100 incredibly talented people who made great films. And if you see the nominations, if you love what this award has received, it’s a distraction from it. I think it’s a shame,” Bajaria said.
Before she disabled her X account, Gascon had a post aimed at Muslim people, black people, George Floyd and diversity at the Academy Awards published in 2021.
It’s been a season of “most toxic” controversy over the years. Is that important?

“This incredible film, made by amazing director Jack Audide, spoke about the controversy over the ‘town’ podcast. “It’s a real shame for many people, like (co-stars) Zoe (Saldaña) and Selena (Gomez). And our awards team has run an incredible campaign for the film.”
Regarding whether Netflix will rethink its social media review practices, Bajaria pointed out that “it’s not really a common practice to screen social tweets like that,” but in the entertainment industry, “many people is reevaluating it.” After the controversy.
Bajaria raises many questions about what the “social media review process” should look like when pushed further on Belloni,” but said he would win the Netflix Buzzy “Emilia” movie Doubled, “I said it’s really going to hurt. From a very special movie.”

“If you ask me today, everything I know, we’ll still buy a movie today,” Baharia added.
“Is it still there even though you knew the tweet?” Veroni asked. “The film is incredibly creative and it’s bold. That’s what you want. You want to take those big swings,” Bajaria said.
Who is Karla Sofia Gascón? The history of trans actress Maechioscar “Emilia Perez”
Born in Madrid, Gascon’s transition to 2018, she is the first openly trans actress to receive an Oscar nod. She was once seen as a pioneering voice for film diversity and advocacy beyond this year at this year’s Oscar campaign.
“All I can do is focus on doing my job and planting seeds by showing me that I am no different than anyone else,” Gascon told USA Today in November . “I just want to live my life without bothering me. Everyone deserves myself.”
She apologised several times for her insensible tweets, but appears to have lost support for Netflix, her co-stars and filmmaker Audido.
“Emilia Perez” Oscar’s hopes are at risk amid gascon scandal
Emilia Perez, the most nominated film at this year’s Academy Awards, was also a sign of a glow of hope for Netflix amidst the uncertain Oscar season.
The company is constantly campaigning for film musicals. This follows Gascon, who plays the Mexican drug kingpin after undergoing gender-affirming surgery and begins a new life as a social worker.
Film co-stars Saldana, Gomez and Adriana Pas shared the best actress award at the Cannes Film Festival in France last spring. However, the controversy threw this year’s Oscar race into the tail spin.
Saldaña is at the forefront of the best supporting actress Oscar after this year’s Golden Globe victory, with Netflix executives hoping for their first best picture victory at the March 2nd ceremony.
Late last month, Saldanya retold her co-star’s controversial tweets, reflecting her previous comments.
“I never believed we were coming here,” Saldanya said in an episode released Thursday in an interview with Variety’s podcast, “Awards Circuit.”
“Sad,” she said of her reaction to the controversy. “Over and over again, it’s because it was the emotion that lived in my heart because it all happened.”
During a Q&A in London the same week, Saldanya tackled the controversy, telling the audience that she was “still dealing with everything that’s happened over the past few days,” according to a video shared by the Hollywood Reporter.
