Tech mogul Elon Musk, who served as President Donald Trump’s close adviser, said on Saturday he wanted to see a “zero tariff situation” between the US and Europe, breaking the president’s decision to impose vast tariffs on most foreign countries.
“I hope that both Europe and the US are, ideally, agreed to move to zero tariff situations to effectively create a free trade zone between Europe and North America,” Musk told the “League Congress” on Saturday.
“That’s what I want, and if you want to work in Europe or in the US, the freedom of those traveling between Europe and North America should be allowed in my opinion.
Musk’s remarks come days after Trump announced tariffs on some of the country’s biggest trading partners. The US is supposed to impose a 20% tariff on the European Union under Trump’s plan.
On Thursday the day after Trump’s announcement, the market plunged, with the S&P 500 index falling nearly 5%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average falling 4%, the Nasdaq slumped 6%, all three recorded its biggest drop in 2020 since the start of the community’s pandemic.
At a White House event that announced tariffs on Wednesday, Trump said the US was “populated, plundered, raped, plundered and plundered” by other countries’ trade policies, calling the next era of the US “the golden age of America.”
In a True Social Saturday post, after two days of stock market collapsed, Trump was stricken with his rationale, which China wrote that “and many other countries have treated us unsustainably badly.”
“This is an economic revolution and we win. Hang, it’s not easy, but the end result is historic. We’ll make America great again!!!” the president added.
So far, European leaders have threatened to deal with Trump’s tariffs along with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
The European Union, like other countries that target tariffs, is threatening to impose measures later this month.
Trump has been on a long way towards free trade, and Musk expressed his support on Saturday. The White House and Musk did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the story.
