Ian Machado Garry defeated Carlos’ Plaits in the highly anticipated UFC welterweight main event in Kansas City.
Ian Machado Gary managed to overcome the horrors of Carlos Plets’ later years and won the unanimous decision in his bounceback efforts to close the welterweight main event in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) battle in Kansas City.
Garry won with the judges’ scorecards, 48-47, 48-47, 49-46, to end his unbeaten run at the UFC.
Garry controlled four of the five rounds on Saturday night, keeping the consignor off guard with excellent movements in the Octagon, feinting, wrestling and strike attacks of off-guard.
In the final minute of the fifth round, Prato made a ferocious comeback, attempting a fifth technical knockout (TKO) against his tall opponent. Pleats unleashed multiple punches against Garry on the feet and on the ground, but the Irish survived the dead onslaught as both fighters were exhausted later in the fight.
After the match, Garry said he was in frost at the gust of the fifth round of the Plays.
“I was not injured,” Garry said after being awarded a decision against Plets. “I was conscious of every moment. I know how dangerous the guy is. I just respect what he and his team (the combat nerd) are doing.”
Garry revealed between champions Beral Muhammad and Jacques Della Madarena that he is the official backup fighter for the UFC 315 welterweight title fight on May 10th.

In Saturday’s co-main event, Mingyaang Chan finished Anthony Smith’s mixed martial arts (MMA) career with a sour note, defeating the former UFC light heavyweight title challenger by first round TKO in 4 minutes and 3 seconds. Chang landed punches and gusts of elbows to overwhelm Nebraska, a native of Nebraska, before the fight was cancelled.
Despite the outcome, Smith said he is proud of what he has achieved in his career up and down.
“I’m going to be grateful that it happened,” Smith said after losing on octagon. “Thank you to everyone.”
Smith retired from MMA with 25 UFC appearances and won at the age of 13. Zhang (19-6 MMA) had yet to see his second round in the victory of his career, but Smith (37-22 MMA) finished his journey with a three-fight streak.
Saturday’s contest was the first UFC event in Kansas City since April 2023.
