Santa Monica, California – Spanish actor Karla Sofía Gascón was one of three “Emilia Pérez” women, despite finding herself at the heart of the Oscar controversy.
The film’s song “Elmal” won the Best Song at the Awards Show on Friday night. This was sent to Gascon, co-star Zoisal Danha and French singer-songwriter Kamille (aka Kamille D’Armay).
Gascon, 52, was not attending the ceremony. The Netflix film won three categories, but she was not mentioned by name in the film’s acceptance speech.
“Thank you to the ‘Emilia Perez’ team. I am grateful that Zoe is such a great artist,” Kamille said, accepting Best Song.

The vote for the Critics’ Choice Award concluded before a controversy broke out over Gascon’s past comments. Gascon, who plays a well-known role in “Emilia Perez,” recently won the headlines in a series of controversial social media posts aimed at diversity in Muslims and black people and Oscars.

In a tweet dated November 23, 2020, translated by USA Today, Gascon wrote in Spanish: Her hair and skirt are lowered to her heels instead of English.
In another post, the Oscar nominee criticized the Academy for the 2021 awards show ceremony, following the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic.
“#OSCARS is increasingly looking like an independent protest movie ceremony. I don’t know if they’re watching the Afro Gods Festival, the Black Lives Matter demonstration, or the 8m. I did,” Gascón wrote. “Apart from that, it’s an ugly, ugly gala.”
In an Instagram post Tuesday, Gascón thanked “Emilia Pérez” director Jacques Audiard and the cast and crew for supporting and understanding her process. She said, “They want to apply ‘cancellation culture’ to me. I ask Hollywood experts, journalists who know me and follow my career. How can I move forward? ”
Two days ago, she wrote a lengthy Instagram post saying “Never asks for forgiveness,” defending her family as racist “opposition.” She also said her past social media posts were shared without the context of a global event that “they were actually dealing with them.” That same day she appeared on CNN En Español for a 50-minute interview with Juan Carlos Arciniegas.

Saldanya continued her winning streak by taking the best support actress in her critical choice.
