Google has announced a new partnership with Gentle Monster at Google I/O 2025 at Warby Parker, and is taking on Meta’s Ray-Ban Meta Glasses by creating smart glasses based on Android XR.
Last year, Google launched the Android XR platform on Qualcomm and Samsung. Although they didn’t talk about specific devices, the latest announcement shows that the company wants to build multiple iterations of glasses and headsets with different partners.
On Tuesday, the company also said it would expand its partnership with Samsung to XR glasses. Additionally, both companies develop software and hardware reference platforms, allowing developers to build solutions.
Samsung, Qualcomm and Google announced their combined reality project in 2023. Samsung then unveiled its Project Moohan headset in late 2024. It is scheduled to debut later this year.
In I/O, Google also unveiled concept glasses based on the Android XR platform, augmented by Gemini AI. Glasses include cameras, microphones and speakers, like Ray-Ban Meta Glasses. However, there is also an optional display to display notifications stuck on the lenses of your glasses.
Google has demonstrated several different use cases, including messaging, turn-by-turn navigation, schedule appointments, live language translation, and photography. The search giant said it is the seed units that select testers to collect feedback.
