Anthropic is launching a new API that allows the Claude AI model to search across the web. Developers using it said in a press release released Wednesday that they can build apps powered by Claude, which will provide the latest updates.
The deployment of APIs will occur as AI companies are looking to scale their models in a variety of ways that could attract new customers to the platform. Last week, humanity debuted a tool to connect applications to Claude, as well as an expanded “deep search” feature that enables Claude Search Enterprise accounts, websites and more.
“Developers can now augment Claude’s comprehensive knowledge with current real-world data by enabling web search tools when making requests to (our) APIs,” Anthropic wrote in the release. “Web search allows developers to build AI solutions that leverage current information without having to manage their own web search infrastructure.”
When the Web Search API is enabled, Claude uses the “inference” feature to determine whether a particular request benefits from the latest information or expertise. If Claude decides to search the web, it generates a search query, retrieves results, analyzes them, and provides answers for citations.
Claude can also refine queries and perform multiple searches to use previous results to inform subsequent queries. In addition to customizing this behavior, developers can also specify domains that are allowed to Claude and not searching. Developers can also allow or prohibit the use of web search at the organization level, Anthropic says.
Prices start from $10 per 1,000 searches. Search works with Anthropic’s Claude 3.7 Sonnet, Newer Claude 3.5 Sonnet, and Claude 3.5 Haiku models.

Related news shows that humanity is bringing web search to Claude Code. ClaudeCode is a tool that allows Dev to tap on Claude to complete various coding tasks. With web search enabled, Claude Code has access to current API documents, technical articles, and other information about development tools and libraries.
