European leaders have said they are ready to provide security guarantees for Ukraine, warning that it is dangerous for Kiev to agree to a ceasefire without a negotiated peace agreement with Moscow, officials say said.
The offer of European security commitment to Ukraine was called by French President Emmanuel Macron after President Donald Trump eliminated European allies and Kiev leadership that will be made in Saudi Arabia with Russia. It was held at a meeting in Paris on Monday. About the contract to end the war in Ukraine.
“I am pleased to be ready. That’s my view from today’s meeting in Paris. Europe is ready and willing to step in. NATO Secretary-General Mark Latte said in an emergency meeting. He said in a social media post.
“We need to determine the details, but our commitment is clear,” Latte said.
European Union officials said after the meeting that the leaders are “ready to provide security assurances to consider modalities with each party, depending on the level of American support.”
“We agree with President Trump on a ‘peace through strength’ approach,” the official said, summarizing the results of the meeting.
“We believe it is dangerous to close a ceasefire without a peace agreement at the same time,” the official said.
Three-hour emergency consultations at Elysee Palace in Paris threw the once-solid Transatlantic Alliance into chaos last week, following a US statement on Ukraine. They also said President Trump and Russian President Vladimir amid fears that Washington is ready to abandon Ukraine and accept the Kremlin, while also giving a cold shoulder to traditional European allies in the US. It followed a call between Putin.
Following today’s meetings with other European leaders, I had a long conversation with President France @emmanuelmacron, discussing the global situation, the European situation, and Ukraine’s security assurance.
We share a common vision: Security Guarantee…
– Volodymyr Zelenskyy /володимирзеленсka (@zelenskyyua) February 17th
Ukrainian President Voldimi Zelensky said he spoke with Macron late Monday about his country’s security guarantees, saying that a weak ceasefire with Russia was “a ‘a ‘a ‘a ‘a ‘a ‘a ‘a ‘a ‘a ‘a ‘a ‘a ‘a ‘a ‘a ‘a ‘a ‘a ‘a ‘a ‘) He added that it would only serve as a prelude.
“We share a common vision. Security assurances must be robust and reliable,” Zelenskyy said on social media.
“Other decisions that do not guarantee such as fragile ceasefires will only serve as another deception by Russia and as a prelude to the new Russian war against Ukraine and other European countries,” he said.
Melinda Herring, a senior non-resident fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Eurasian Centre, told Al Jazeera that Europe was “taken by surprise” by Washington’s overture to Russia.
“It’s very strange that invaders are meeting the US without Ukraine. The longstanding policy of the US was “nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine,” Haring said.
“So it’s definitely a policy change. But it also means that the most charitable interpretation is that the US is trying to see if Russia is ultimately serious (about peace) or not.” she said.
“We’ve now started negotiating with our American colleagues.”
According to the report, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been in Saudi Arabia for consultations with US national security adviser Mike Waltz and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Kremlin foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov. I’m here.
Ushakov on Monday said discussions about Ukraine were strictly bilateral when he arrived in Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh, reported Russia’s RIA Regional News.
“We’ve started negotiating with our American colleagues,” Leah said Ushakov. “These are bilateral conversations, purely bilateral. There can’t be trilateral meetings in Riyadh.”
Al Jazeera’s Heidi Zhou-castro said that communications and talks about peace deals between the Trump administration and Moscow would mark a reversal of the approach to Ukraine before Joe Biden’s administration.
“With Biden, we have heard so many affirmations about Ukraine’s position in the war, but that’s the opposite since Trump took office,” Zhou Kingdom said.
“From his Secretary of Defense from his (Trump) administration, we really heard the US side in the position of negotiations in Russia. We no longer support Ukraine’s NATO membership,” she said.
“Both swallowing for Ukraine are very bitter pills.
“The US has not telegraphed its expectations for tomorrow, but the Russian Foreign Ministry says it will take the path to a meeting between Trump and Putin.”
British Prime Minister Kiel Starmer, German Prime Minister Olaf Scholz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Poland Prime Minister Donald Tass and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez attended the meeting alongside Macron of Paris. The meeting also featured Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schov, Danish Prime Minister Mette Fredericksen, NATO Prime Minister Latte, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and Council of Europe President Antonio Costa.
