The social media campaign depicts a fictional scene of people becoming disillusioned with the Chinese Communist Party, ruled by officials.
The CIA has launched a Chinese-language social media campaign calling on Chinese government officials to reveal secrets to the US.
The two videos released Thursday depict fictional scenes involving Chinese officials approaching top intelligence agencies after being disillusioned with the Chinese ruling Communist Party (CCP).
In one of the videos, the actor who portrays a senior CCP member explains the fear he feels in his family as he witnesses officials around him being purged like “wearing shoes.”
“This man has worked diligently towards the top all his life, but now he is deeply aware that no matter how high he is, no matter how high he is, it is not enough to protect his family in these disturbed and unstable times,” he reads a Chinese description in a YouTube video.
“He wants to find a way to control his destiny and protect the results he has built through his family and years of hard work.
Videos released on platforms including Facebook, Telegram, Instagram and X include instructions to “safely” and “safely” contact the CIA, such as using the Dark web browser Tor.
“One of the CIA’s main roles is to gather information for the president and policymakers,” CIA director John Ratcliffe said in an interview with Fox News.
“One way we do it is to employ assets that help us steal secrets.”
The Chinese Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Desmond Schum, a British-resident Chinese property tycoon, described the CIA campaign as the most “aggressive public move” against China in its living memory.
“This kind of public outreach is truly a kind of provocation that infuriates the CCP, and Xi personally ginping,” Shum said in X, referring to China’s President Xi Jinping.
“His lifelong obsession with rules stems from a singular goal: ensuring the party’s unwavering control over China.”
