Openai’s flagship AI chatbot ChatGpt returned to solid growth in the second half of 2024, according to a new report published Thursday by VC company Andreessen Horowitz (A16Z). It took nine months for the app to grow from 100 million weeks of active users in November 2023 to 100 million weeks of active users in August 2024, but it took less than six months for the app to double those numbers.
Shortly after its release as a survey preview of its November 2022 release, ChatGpt has become the fastest app ever to reach 100 million active users.
By November 2023, ChatGpt had grown to 300 million by December 2024, then increased to 400 million in February 2025.
According to the A16Z, the initial consumer demand for CHATGPT was more driven by novelty. In other words, consumers were interested in trying out the app, but were not necessarily sure how it would fit into everyday life.
However, recent growth in CHATGPT follows the release of new models and features, including the launch of the GPT-4O, which adds multimodal features. Shortly after the release of that model, the use of ChatGPT was spiked from April to May 2024.
After that, after the arrival of Advanced Voice mode, usage grew again from July to August 2024. The O1 model series led to an increase in usage from September to October 2024.
On mobile, ChatGpt’s growth is more consistent, the company notes.
CHATGPT mobile app users have grown from 5% to 15% each month over the past year, with 175 million CHATGPT totaling 400 million active users accessing apps on mobile devices.
The report also examines the impact of rivals, such as Deepseek’s on the market. The app surged worldwide in just 10 days, reaching second place in mobile in February, winning 15% of ChatGPT’s mobile user base.
According to data from the Mobile Intelligence Provider Sensor Tower, DeepSeek users are slightly more involved than Prplexity and Claude users on mobile. However, it is behind ChatGpt in this respect.
Other findings from the new market analysis include tool recommendations for AI developers and coders, rankings of top AI apps by category and revenue, and rankings of top Genai apps across mobile and web.
In the latter aspect, CHATGPT ranks number one by unique monthly visits on the web and monthly active users on mobile, citing data from the Market Intelligence Provider Simorweb.
