Openai is releasing GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 MINI AI models at CHATGPT. The company announced in a post on Wednesday X.
The GPT-4.1 model needs to help software engineers writing or debugging code using ChatGPT, Openai spokesman Shaokyi Amdo told TechCrunch. GPT-4.1, according to Openai, is better at coding and instruction than the GPT-4o, but faster than the O-series inference model.
The company says it is rolling out GPT-4.1 to ChatGpt Plus, Pro and Team subscribers. Meanwhile, Openai has released the GPT-4.1 Mini for free and is paying for ChatGPT users. As a result of this update, Openai is removing GPT-4.0 MINI from ChatGPT for all users.
Openai launched the GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 Mini in April, but released the model via a developer API. At the time, the company faced criticism from the AI research community for shipping GPT-4.1 without a safety report. These researchers argued that Openai is lowering the standards for transparency into AI models. However, Openai argued that despite the improvements in performance and speed of GPT-4.1 compared to GPT-4O, this model is not a frontier model and therefore does not require the same safety reporting as a more capable model does.
“GPT-4.1 does not introduce new modalities or ways to interact with models and does not outweigh the intelligence O3,” said Johannes Heidecke, Head of Safety Systems at Openai, in a post on X Wednesday. “This means that safety considerations here are substantial, but distinct from the frontier model.”
Currently, Openai is releasing more information on GPT-4.1 and all its AI models. Earlier on Wednesday, Openai pledged to publish the results of safety assessments of internal AI models more frequently, as part of its efforts to increase transparency. These results are present in Openai’s new safety assessment hub, which began on Wednesday.
The release of GPT-4.1 in ChATGPT occurs when AI coding tools are attracting attention. Openai is reportedly approaching the announcement of a $3 billion acquisition of Windsurf, one of the most popular AI coding tools on the market. Earlier on Wednesday, Google updated the Gemini Chatbot and connected it to the GitHub project with ease.
