President Donald Trump said early Thursday he will be signing America’s first trade deal with the UK since he announced he had wiped out global tariffs threatening to attack markets and promote the global economy.
In a post about the True Society, the president wrote:
Trump has repeatedly suggested that foreign countries are keen to craft deals with Washington to avoid the worst effects of taxation announced last month, but this is the first such deal. According to the US Trade Representative, only four countries import more US goods than the UK.
Trump wrote on an early Thursday of True Social about “a massive 10am press conference tomorrow morning, an oval office, a massive trade deal with representatives of a large and highly respected country.”
The New York Times first reported on Wednesday, when Trump is scheduled to announce his contract with the UK, citing three people who are familiar with the deal.
The deal will be a boost for Trump, who said the nation “want to do a deal” after the announcement of tariffs he called “liberation date” on April 2nd.
Trump trade adviser Peter Navarro has since said there could be “90 transactions in 90 days” but there was nothing for 36 days around the world, but countries around the world complain that tariffs are unfair and least noticeable, and Trump is trying to ease fears of rising prices at home.
The UK government said in a statement early Thursday that it was in talks with Washington about a potential deal, but instead refused to confirm the signature, saying Prime Minister Kiel Starmer would update later. The UK’s Ministry of Business and Trade said in a statement it would not comment on “speculations.”
“The United States is an integral ally to both our economic and national security. Consultations on our interstate transactions continue at a pace, and the Prime Minister will update later today.”
President Trump said at a special envoy to Middle East Steve Witkov on Wednesday that Britain “hopes to make a very bad deal.”
“I think the UK, like all other countries, they want to do.
The deal marks the first deal Trump has publicly announced since he enacted new tariffs in dozens of countries and then suspended.
