Snapchat announced on Wednesday that Snap Map currently has over 400 million active users. This is one new milestone in the core features of the app.
Released in 2017, Snap Map was originally a way for users to see their friends’ locations and browse public snaps around the world. Over time, this feature has evolved, providing a way for users to discover local hotspots and find out what to do.
Snap Map success is important to Snapchat. This is because it is an important part of social networks and gives them a competitive edge against rivals like Instagram and Tiktok.
Instagram is aware of this. Meta-owned social networks have been found to be working on a “friend map” that allows users to see their friends’ locations in real time.
“Snap Map is one of the most used mobile maps in the world and we are excited to see our community continue to grow,” Ceci Mourkogiannis, Vice President of Products at Snap, said in a statement from TechCrunch. “Snapmaps make hundreds of millions of people connect with friends and their favorite places, discover what’s going on around them, and make the world feel more connected every day.”
This news comes as Snapchat has been updating Snap maps with additional features over the years. Last year, the company launched the “footsteps” feature. This feature allows you to see how much you explored and track where you traveled.
Additionally, Snapchat has deployed “promoted locations” in the snapmap as a way for users to discover new locations. For brands, promoted Places offer the ability to promote and showcase all locations with snapmaps.
