Instacart CEO Fidji Simo has joined Openai as CEO of the application, ChatGpt Maker said Thursday. Already a member of Openai’s board, Simo will move from Instacart over the next few months and will be joining the AI company full-time later this year.
Openai CEO Sam Altman said he will continue his role and oversee verticals such as research, calculations and applications. Shimo reports directly to Altman.
“The application brings together existing business and operations team groups that are responsible for how our research reaches the world and brings benefits. Fiji has uniquely qualified to lead this group. Over the past year, Fiji has already made a significant contribution to our company.
Shimo will also help Openai in expanding the “traditional” company functions, Altman said, but he did not provide further details.
Shimo has many years of experience in product management and monetization. Before joining Instacart in 2021, she spent over a decade in Meta. Oversees Facebook app monetization headlines, Facebook video product development. We help you build an advertising business. She left Meta as head of the Facebook app. After joining Instacart, she helped open the company in 2023.
In a post on X, Shimo said he will be chairing the Instacart board. In a letter to Instacart employees, she said that current members of the company’s management will replace her as CEO, and that an announcement will be made soon.
“It’s an incredible privilege and responsibility to join Openai at this critical moment. This organization could accelerate human potential at a pace we’ve never seen before, and I’m deeply committed to shaping these applications towards the public interest,” she said in a statement.
