The $236 billion gap, known as the trade deficit, is something US President Donald Trump wants to reduce.
To close the gap, on April 2, the US imposes a 20% tariff on goods imported from the EU, reducing European exports to the US and encouraging domestic production.
Furthermore, the EU faces 25% US tariffs on steel, aluminum and cars.
In response, the EU has decided to charge retaliation fees on US goods worth $23.8 billion, with EU officials describing US tariffs as “unfair and damaging.”
