Context.ai, a startup building assessment and analysis of AI models, announced on Tuesday that its co-founder will be joining Openai.
Context.AI will follow the message on the company’s website and will discontinue the product following the acquisition employment. When contacted for comment, Openai refused to disclose the terms of the transaction.
“EVALS is a requirement for building high-performance AI applications, but it’s hard to do the right thing today,” the message reads. “We built (model) ebal and analysis at Context.ai for two years. We used some pivots along the way. We couldn’t be more excited about this next chapter of our journey at Openai, and we’re grateful to everyone who participated.”
Context.AI was founded in 2023 by former Google CEO Henry Scott-Green and Alex Gamble (CTO). The startup raised $3.5 million in seed funding from GV and Theory ventures that same year.
One of Context.AI’s flagship products was a dashboard that customers could use to delve into the data generated by their models and figure out whether they were creating content that really helped them with their response queries. Context.AI users can share transcripts via the API. This Context.AI analyzes groups and tags based on subject.
“The phrase I always hear is, ‘My model is a black box,'” Scott Green told TechCrunch in a 2023 interview. “We’ve spoken with hundreds of developers (models) who are building them. They have a very consistent set of issues. These issues are that they don’t understand how people use their models and don’t understand the performance of the models.”
Context.AI had six employees as of August 2023. It is unclear how big the team is today and whether all staff will be offered jobs at Openai.
In an X post, Scott-Green said he and Gamble will focus on model evaluations and create “the tools developers need to succeed” in Openai. According to Scott-Green’s LinkedIn profile, he is currently the product manager for Openai’s Building Evals.
