The Toronto Blue Jays’ first baseman Vladimir Guerrero JR has signed a $500 million extension to stay at the club, according to reports.
The Toronto Blue Jays and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. have agreed to a 14-year, $500 million contract extension, several media outlets reported.
The deal, leaked Sunday, is reportedly the second most valuable deal in the majors, surpassing the top only by Juan Soto’s 15-year, $765 million deal that reached December, as it does not include any delayed money.
Guerrero, the four-time All-Star and MVP runner-up in 2021, was scheduled to become a free agent at the end of the season. By locking him now, Toronto avoids the risk of participating in a massive bid war in the open market.
In his career, the 26-year-old has a .287 batting average with 160 home runs, 511 RBIs (or running), and 829 games. Last season he hit 30 home runs and drove on the .323/.396/.544 batting line with 103 RBI.
In 10 games this season, Guerrero has hit .256 with home runs and four RBIs.
