Medley, Fla. – The other one-on-one women’s basketball tournaments are fast-paced and relentless. Breanna Stewart had the league co-founder kicked out on the first night of the competition just three minutes later.
Stewart fell to her unparalleled teammate Aaliyah Edwards 12-0 in the first round matchup in the league’s midseason tournament on Monday night.
“Lee was hot. She was just aggressive and I’m happy with her. Stewart told USA Today Sports after being defeated by her Mist teammate.
Naphesa Collier, Kahleah Copper, Rhyne Howard, Skylar Diggins-Smith, Allisha Gray, Rickea Jackson and Shakira Austin are all moving into the second round on Tuesday.
Eight first round games were played on Monday night, while the other games lasted about 6-7 minutes as they scored 11 points on Twos and Three.
However, the Stewart-Edwards game is the biggest upset of the night, setting the stage for the remaining tournaments, where the winners win $200,000 out of the $350,000 in prize pool money.
The qualification is clear. Stewart, 30, is a WNBA Finals MVP, three-time WNBA champion and three-time Olympic Gold medalist. She was one of the four No. 1 seeds of the tournament.
Edwards was one of the number eight seeds, but the Washington mystic pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft definitely didn’t play as a fellow Connecticut standout did.
“It was crazy. My strategy was to trust my shot first and then get some buckets on a comfortable rim. But I’m ready for now. “I did,” Edwards told USA Today Sports after the game. “I’m sad that it had to be against Stewie. I feel it was a setup. But fog and uconn for life.”
The unparalleled players slowly took up a one-on-one strategy after seeing Collier watch fellow standout Katie Lou Samuelson 12-6 in the first game.
Shakira Austin, the third pick in Mystics’ 2022 WNBA Draft, used her size to get the best of Chelsea Gray, the 2022 WNBA Finals MVP, three-time WNBA champions. She also learned to keep pace after seeing Collier win.
“If you play smartly after scoring, you can spend time. From the first game, I saw Phee do it a few times. As a big guy who has to take it from the half court. , I have to save my breath,” Austin said.
Rhyne Howard took advantage of the wrinkles in the game. There, players were allowed to clear the ball by handing the ball to someone stationary on the court before resetting backwards like a 3-pointer. Howard rested wisely before clearing up her belongings.
“They said if you’re going to do the outlet, you can’t throw it at you until you clear,” Howard said. “It’s a non-stop game. But it really helped me to be able to find those little moments in the game to take my breath.”
Meanwhile, other players like Allisha Gray, Skylar Diggins-Smith and Rickea Jackson were like Edwards in ways that put pressure on his enemies.
Diggins-Smith said she tried to speed up the tall Dearica Hamby by getting her defensively down. And when it’s time to shoot from outside, follow me. She was 3 out of six from 3-point range in a 11-3 victory.
“I was trying to pick my spot and take a shot. I was just trying to chuckle and chase myself, like some people are doing it,” Diggins- Smith said. “I was staying with my follow-through and trying to beat some.”
Jackson, who beat Jackie Young 11-3, focused on playing efficiently and quickly, rather than playing back and forth as we saw in previous games.
Jackson will face Collier in the next round on Tuesday. Collier averaged 29.3 points and 11.5 rebounds during the 3-on-3 game, and was the best player of a similar game overall.
“I think it’s pretty exciting to watch. Fee is strong like hell. I have to box it out and don’t let her score a second chance point. Jackson said of Collier. “She is strong. is very experienced and we match pretty well. But I certainly aim for that.”
