The Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles once again meet in the Super Bowl. This time, a little bit more than the Lombardi Trophy is on the line in New Orleans.
Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Andy Reid and the rest of the Chiefs squad will stare down NFL history when they take the field in the Caesars Superdome: No team has ever won three consecutive Super Bowls, something that Kansas City will achieve with a win.
The Chiefs certainly have the squad with which to do it. Despite questions over its ugly regular-season wins, Kansas City finished 15-2 and bounced chief rival Buffalo in the AFC championship game en route to its fifth Super Bowl appearance in six years. Whether it’s their high-powered defense or that trademark Mahomes magic, the Chiefs have found ways to finish the job all season.
The Eagles are looking for something themselves: Revenge for their Super Bowl 57 loss to Kansas City. This time around, Philadelphia is a more well-rounded team, thanks in no small part to running back Saquon Barkley. Barkley has been stellar in Eagles green, dominating on the ground in his first year in the City of Brotherly Love.
It doesn’t stop with Barkley, however. Philadelphia’s star-studded squad, featuring Jalen Hurts, A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith and others, is perhaps the most talented team that Kansas City has faced in the Super Bowl. That all means this matchup has the makings of an NFL classic.

Will the Chiefs continue to make and capture NFL history? Or will the Eagles prove revenge is a dish best served down on the bayou?
The 2024 NFL season reaches its epic finale Sunday night. USA TODAY Sports will be covering everything from Super Bowl 59 game day, from the national anthem to the postgame celebration, below. All times are Eastern.
Eagles 34, Chiefs 0: Hurts finds DeVonta Smith for long TD
On their first play of their next drive, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts faked a handoff to Saquon Barkley and found wideout DeVonta Smith deep for a 46-yard touchdown. Jake Elliott’s extra point is good and the Eagles build their lead even more with 2:40 to go in the third quarter.
Chiefs can’t overcome holding call, turn over on downs
A holding call on tackle Jawaan Taylor nullified a seven-yard run by Patrick Mahomes to force a 3rd-and-13 from the Chiefs at their own 38. An eight-yard completion to Travis Kelce made it 4th-and-5 but the Chiefs were not able convert as Eagles cornerback Avonte Maddox knocked the ball down.
That forced a turnover on downs and Philadelphia’s offense takes over at the Chiefs’ 38-yard line with 2:50 to go in the third quarter.
Eagles 27, Chiefs 0: Jake Elliott makes second FG of game
The Eagles drove 74 yards in 11 plays but quarterback Jalen Hurts couldn’t find DeVonta Smith in bounds on 3rd-and-goal. The Eagles had to settle for a 29-yard field goal and Jake Elliott knocked it through, his second of the night.
Hurts had multiple key scrambles on the drive to move the sticks for the Eagles’ offense. He had two runs for 30 yards, the first on a 3rd-and-5 at their own 25-yard line.
Kansas City will get the ball back with 5:18 to go in the third quarter.
Jalen Hurts stats
Philadelphia’s quarterback made a key first-down conversion with his legs in the Eagles’ first drive of the second half. Hurts is 13 of 17 passing for 133 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He also has nine carries for 41 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
Eagles sack Mahomes twice to force punt
A drive that started out better than before ended in similar fashion for the Chiefs. Philadelphia sacked Mahomes on consecutive plays to force 3rd-and-17 from the Chiefs’ own 37. Patrick Mahomes scrambled for eight yards but couldn’t move the chains.
Josh Sweat and Jordan Davis both notched sacks on the drive to give the Eagles five in the game. Philadelphia’s offense will take over from their own 20-yard line with 12:00 to go in the third quarter.
Chiefs manage second first down of the game
Kansas City’s offense is already off to a better start in the third quarter. Patrick Mahomes’ completion to Xavier Worthy gave them just the second first down of the night and their first since their opening possession.
Patrick Mahomes stats
The two-time defending Super Bowl MVP completed just 6 of 14 passes for 33 yards and two interceptions in the first half. The Chiefs start with the ball to open the second half.

Eagles dominate first half, lead by 24 at the break
There is always a vast range of outcomes in the Super Bowl, but no one saw this coming. The back-to-back champs don’t even belong on the same field in New Orleans. Philly’s domination is the story, but the Chiefs’ struggles might be even bigger. For a team that always seems to find a way, they have no answers through 30 minutes of game action.
They’ll have about 30 minutes of real time before action resumes and then another 30 minutes of game time to pull off a miracle comeback. It’s a tall task, but Tom Brady once showed that a 25-point comeback is possible. Sorry, Falcons fans.
DeAndre Hopkins’ drop forces Kansas City punt
That was the Chiefs’ first half in a nutshell. Mahomes escaped pressure and finally found a receiver on the move. Except that receiver was Hopkins and he can’t haul it in despite no one being in his zip code. Kansas City punts, securing a first half shutout.
Eagles-Chiefs score: A.J. Brown finds the end zone to extend the lead
The Eagles are making it look easy in the Big Easy. Brown, fresh off complaining to Nick Sirianni, gets his wish and waltzes into the end zone for the score. Philly is on cruise control.
Patrick Mahomes intercepted again
Well, so much for that.
Mahomes tosses another interception, this time to Zack Baun. The Eagles take over at the Kansas City 14, where they’ll try to add to the lead. It’s never truly over with the Chiefs, but it’s getting ugly early.
Chiefs finally get a stop, have chance to score before halftime
After Nick Bolton extended the Eagles drive with an unnecessary roughness penalty, the Chiefs finally get off the field. Mahomes has one more chance to get Kansas City on the board before Kendrick Lamar entertains the viewing audience.
Chiefs add another three-and-out, Eagles defense locks in
Tom Brady is in the booth calling this game and he’s watching a familiar script unfold. The Chiefs can’t protect Mahomes and he’s paying the price right now. Everything is difficult for the team in red-and-white, who remain in a 17-point hole. Four years ago, Mahomes couldn’t be protected and the Buccaneers went on for a blowout win in the Super Bowl, 31-9.
Eagles-Chiefs score: Patrick Mahomes tosses pick-six to Cooper DeJean
Well, happy birthday to Cooper DeJean. The Eagles rookie picks off Mahomes to celebrate year No. 22 and returns it to the house for a touchdown. The Chiefs have made a living on comebacks and close wins this season, but it might be time to panic in Kansas City.
Andy Reid’s team is getting punched in the face so far and is on the ropes, as Philly leads 17-0.
Eagles-Chiefs score: Jake Elliott extends the lead
After pretending to go for it on fourth down and then some false start funny business, Elliott puts three on the board from 48 yards away to push the score to 10-0. Depending on your perspective, this either feels insurmountable for the Chiefs or a missed opportunity for the Eagles, who have owned the ball all game and don’t have much to show for it. Time will tell.
Mekhi Becton injury update
While the interception wasn’t costly, the drive certainly was. The Eagles lost their right guard, Becton, on the series with a knee injury. He spent about 10 minutes in the medical tent, according to Tom Rinaldi, and is now questionable to return. Tyler Steen has taken over for the time being.
Chiefs go three-and-out, can’t capitalize on turnover
The interception goes to waste for Kansas City. Mahomes was looking for Travis Kelce on third down, but rushed the throw and can’t connect.
In other words, the Eagles’ defense is, well, flying around and having a major impact. A quick three plays is all it takes for them to send the ball back to Philly, who will take over at their own 45.
Jalen Hurts tosses interception, gifts Chiefs ball back
The Chiefs are reeling early in this one, but Hurts decided a late Christmas gift would be a good idea. He showcased some questionable arm strength in the face of pressure, lofting one up for Bryan Cook.
The chef comes down with it at the Kansas City two yard line. That’s where Mahomes and company will go back to work.
Eagles lead Chiefs at end of first quarter
Kansas City appeared to have pushed the Eagles out of field goal range with a 10-yard sack of quarterback Jalen Hurts by Chiefs edge rusher George Karlaftis on third-and-4 on the 35. However, refs flagged Charles Omenihu for defensive offsides. Instead, Philadelphia got another first down to extend its third drive.
Hurts’ quarterback keeper ended the first quarter when safety Chamarri Conner tackled him for a four-yard loss. The Eagles have the ball on the Kansas City 34-yard line and hold a 7-0 lead to begin the second quarter.
Eagles defense holding Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes in check
The Chiefs went three-and-out on their second possession of the Super Bowl. They gained seven yards on the first two plays before coming up empty on third down, and punter Matt Araiza’s fourth-down kick ended up in the end zone.
Philadelphia takes over for a third possession in the first quarter on its own 20-yard line.
Eagles get on board first courtesy of ‘Tush Push’
Jalen Hurts and the Eagles executed their “Tush Push” play to perfection from the 1-yard line to score the first points of Super Bowl 59. Hurts tried using a hard count a couple of times to no avail before taking the snap. He surged forward to get the one yard he needed for an Eagles touchdown.
Kicker Jake Elliott knocked through the PAT to make it 7-0 Eagles with 6:15 left in the first quarter.
Jahan Dotson puts Eagles in scoring position
Jahan Dotson seemed to have scored the first points of Super Bowl 59 when he caught a deep pass from quarterback Jalen Hurts down the right sideline. Running back Saquon Barkley stayed in the backfield to help block the blitzing Kansas City defenders, and Hurts took advantage of the 1-on-1 matchup.
However, a replay on Fox’s broadcast showed that Dotson may have been down just short of the goal line.
Referees flag Trent McDuffie for questionable unnecessary roughness penalty
After an incomplete pass intended for Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert on third down, refs flagged Chiefs cornerback Trent McDuffie for unnecessary roughness for contact to Goedert’s helmet. The penalty gave Philadelphia a first down to extend its drive.
The Eagles are on the Kansas City 28-yard line with under seven minutes to go in the first quarter. It’s still 0-0.
Eagles get stop, force Chiefs punt
The Eagles were able to stop the Chiefs on Kansas City’s first third-down play of the game. On a third-and-9 from the Chiefs’ 24-yard line, Philadelphia’s front applied pressure quickly, and quarterback Patrick Mahomes had to scramble away. His pass attempt was almost intercepted near the sideline but fell incomplete.
Cooper DeJean returned the punt for the Eagles on the following play, and Philadelphia will begin its second possession on its own 31-yard line.
Chiefs get benefit of first penalty, Eagles punt
The Eagles went for it on their first fourth down of the game. On fourth-and-2 from the 50-yard line, Hurts threw a deep pass and found wide receiver A.J. Brown on the sideline. The play was called back for offensive pass interference on Brown when he put his hand on cornerback Trent McDuffie’s face mask right before making the catch.
Fox color commentator Tom Brady was critical of the call, as was rules analyst Mike Pereira.
Philadelphia punted after the penalty, so the Chiefs will take over on their own 12-yard line.
Chiefs win coin toss, defer to second half
Referee Ron Torbert conducted the coin toss before kickoff. Chiefs defensive lineman Chris Jones correctly called tails as his team’s representative, and Kansas City elected to defer.
The Eagles will receive the opening kickoff in Super Bowl 59. The Chiefs will receive the kickoff to open the second half.

And one of the things he left me was a mink jacket,” Hopkins said. “And so I always said I would wear that mink jacket to my wedding or to the Super Bowl, whichever one happened first. Nevertheless, the Eagles went on to rout Washington, 55-23, just a few days later.
