“Emilia Perez” director Jack Audido is speaking out as Oscar Darling film star Cara Sofia Gascon is in the midst of a PR crisis.
In a deadline-limited Q&A released Wednesday, the French director distanced himself from the Spanish actress. He issued numerous official statements last week in response to a racist and xenophobic social media post that X users resurfaced.
“It’s very difficult to look back on the work I did with Carla Sofia,” Odide told Deadline. “The trust we shared, the exceptional atmosphere we had on a set that we actually based on trust. And then you had that kind of relationship and suddenly you said that person When you read something, and when you read that it is definitely worth existing in hatred, of course, that relationship is affected.”
He called Gascon’s post “unacceptable” and confirmed that he had not been in contact with her last week. He said he had no plans to contact her.
“I’m not talking to her. I don’t want to. She’s falling into a self-destructive approach that I can’t interfere with. I really don’t know why she’s continuing,” he said. I said. “Why is she hurting herself? Why? I don’t understand that. What I don’t understand about this is that she hurting people very close to her. That’s why.”

Gascon made history as the first openly trans actress to be awarded the Academy Awards on March 2nd, and received an Oscar nomination. While offering her “heartfelt apologies” to her past comments that appear to have been published recently in 2020, Gascon also brought her long-standing posts to the forefront, saying, “They achieved my goals and achieved my goals. Beings with lies and things that are out of context.”
“She really plays the victim,” Audido said of Gascon’s recent statement. “She is talking about herself as a victim, and that’s amazing. It’s as if she thought the words weren’t hurt.”

“Emilia Perez” led this year’s Oscar race with 13 nominations, and the star is busy promoting Golden Globe-winning musicals at the awards circuit. Odid and his cast, including Selena Gomez and Golden Globe winner Zoe Saldana, are expected at industry events in February, including Critics’ Choice Awards this Friday.
But Odide said recent events have stifled the atmosphere of celebration: “There’s something sad about it.”
In an Instagram post Tuesday, Gascón thanked Audiard and the cast and crew of “Emilia Pérez” for their support and understanding of her process. She said, “They want to apply ‘cancellation culture’ to me. I ask Hollywood experts, journalists who know me and follow my career. How can I move forward? ”

In another post, the Oscar nominee criticized the Academy for the 2021 awards show ceremony, following the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic.
“#OSCARS is increasingly looking like an independent protest movie ceremony. I don’t know if they’re watching the Afro Gods Festival, the Black Lives Matter demonstration, or the 8m. I did,” Gascón wrote. “Apart from that, it’s an ugly, ugly gala.”
